It started with the idea jointly conceived by Jacob & Co. and Bugatti-how to reproduce the inner feeling of the iconic Bugatti 16-cylinder engine in a clock.
After nearly a year of development, the answer here is the Bugatti Chiron Tourbillon. Everything is to pay tribute to the watchmaker. The design of the case was inspired by Chiron’s smooth lines, and the movement or “engine block” (designed to replicate a Bugatti engine) was placed under a huge sapphire crystal and displayed to everyone.
In 2019, Bugatti and Jacob & Co. signed a multi-year partnership to create unique, never-before-seen timepieces. These two watches adhere to the spirit of the two companies and push the watchmaking industry to impossible heights
In order to create a performance-led partnership, two timepieces were created. Based on Twin Turbo Furious and Epic X Chrono, these watches are directly inspired by the unique design and spirit of Bugatti supercars.
In 2020, Jacob & Co. and Bugatti launched the new Twin Turbo Furious series of watches and the new Bugatti Chiron series.
Mechanical anomaly: The Bugatti Chiron tourbillon watch stood out from hundreds of works and was one of the six finalists in the category. This watch has a 30-degree tilt tourbillon and 16-piston engine animation, which is truly extraordinary.
The Bugatti Chiron tourbillon has a 30º tilting tourbillon, this is the first time that Jacob & Co. has used a tilting tourbillon. The “flying” part of the tourbillon means that the adjustment mechanism is only supported on one side, so the tourbillon is even more fascinating. The 30º tilt makes it easier to appreciate this incredible complication.
What’s interesting is that by pressing the right crown of the clock, the engine starts to work-like a real internal combustion engine, the crankshaft turns and the 16 pistons pump up and down. When the engine is running, the two “turbochargers” (the actual Chiron engine has four) rotating on the side of the engine block increase the visual impact.
The appearance of the Bugatti Chiron Tourbillon watches is unbelievable, it is unbelievable to realize (the movement consists of 578 parts), can be perfectly combined with the engine and the watch, achieving unprecedented achievements.
The movement is completely suspended in four places, looking like an actual car vibration from Chiron. The movement is actually floating inside the case-you can see it moving up and down. The engine block is composed of two “exhaust ports”, thus completing the design of the engine theme.
The top and sides of the watch are sapphire crystals, making each side of the watch visible. Of course, the most attractive is the engine animation. The crankshaft that drives the crankshaft is one of the smallest and most complex watch components ever made, and is made of a single piece of solid steel. Pistons that are difficult to manufacture are mounted on the crankshaft at various angles to maximize the effect.
The power reserve of the animation and the power reserve of the chronograph are different, but both are wound on the mainspring, the movement rotates clockwise, and the engine animation rotates counterclockwise. There is even a power reserve indicator on the side of the pressure gauge at nine o’clock to indicate the time.
The crown of the luxury watch is located at the bottom of the case-the left crown sets the time, the middle crown wraps around the movement (60-hour power reserve) and animation at the same time. Press the right crown to start the animation.
The suspension of the movement presents another challenge to movement designers, because they have to create (and apply for a patent) a special automotive-style joint transverse system to protect the ejector rod from the up and down movement of the case. .
