Porsche Design‘s new bespoke watches revolutionized the luxury watch industry. By using the specially developed watch configurator, you can assemble the watch according to the customer’s choice, from the case, the strap to the personal engraving, everything. These watches are all based on the high-performance Porsche Design Chronotimer Series 1 and are produced at Porsche’s Swiss watch factory. All available configuration options come from the Porsche 911, such as the use of high-tech material titanium, which is a tribute to the lightweight structure of the legendary sports car. The color selection of the timepiece is inspired by the internal and external colors of the 911, while the rotor is derived from the 911 hub design. Everything is in line with Porsche’s production principles and Porsche’s typical qualities, which makes this watch revolutionary. One!
A brief history of Porsche design timepieces
Porsche is world-renowned for its bold aesthetics and spectacular mechanical design, not just its cars.
For nearly half a century, Porsche has also produced some of the most convincing timepieces on the market under the protection of the Porsche Design brand. Founded in 1972 by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, the son of the founder of Porsche, Porsche Design continues to inject Porsche DNA into lifestyle products, including but not limited to timepieces.
After Porsche 911 (F.A. Porsche) was born the most iconic car of the brand, it withdrew from the company and established Porsche Design. The first product of this sub-brand is a watch: the iconic Chronograph 1.
As the first fully frosted black buy luxury watches from the strap to the case to achieve the best readability, Chronograph 1 followed the dashboard of the Porsche sports car and quickly entered the embrace of some of the racing world and the most famous figures in Hollywood.
About 50 years later, Porsche Design continues to uphold the tradition of repacking its vehicle functions into gorgeous function tables.
Although there are dozens of Porsche Design watches to choose from in 2020, here are two timepieces worth considering:
The Porsche 911 Turbo S chronograph is specially provided for future owners of the 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series sports car, and can only run 500 individually marked parts. It can be customized like the car itself. Its winding rotor can reflect the wheel’s contour. Many colors and decorations. The perfect accessory for the new Porsche 911 Turbo S.
To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the brand, Porsche released the new 911 Speedster, which combines a retro look with a modern design. To further commemorate this milestone, Porsche Design designed a pair of chronographs (911 Speedster and 911 Speedster Heritage Design) specifically for those driving the new 911 Speedster. The Porsche Design Chronograph 911 Speedster has many design features in cars, such as the dial that can reveal the tradition of the dashboard and tachometer of a sports car, and the winding tourbillon that matches the color of the car itself. There are only 1,948 vehicles in total, which reflects the year that Porsche was founded, each of which is engraved with a limited edition car paired with it.
Porsche Design 1919 Globetimer UTC
At the 2019 Basel International Watch and Jewellery Show, the main new watch designed by Porsche in Germany is the Porsche Design 1919 Globetimer UTC. As a style, Germans generally prefer to use the term “UTC” (Coordinated Universal Time) rather than Greenwich Mean Time (“GMT”), but in reality, they are the same thing. Porsche Design not only hopes to release GMT (UTC) watches in the new era of the brand, but also hopes to obtain something technically interesting, unique and practical. The Globetimer UTC designed by Porsche in 1919 is all this.
Inside the watch is a brand new movement that Porsche Design calls “inside”. I believe this is an exclusive movement made for them, called movement WERK 04.110, which relies on the modules on the basic movement. WERK 04.110 operates at 4Hz, has a power reserve of 38 hours (currently, at this price point, the watch is a bit small), and includes local time with AM/PM indicator window, date hand and a second 24 hours The time-zone indicator pointer can be adjusted in either direction using the button on the case.
The 1919 Globetimer UTC is very suitable as a travel watch because it has the ability to adjust the UTC pointer “eastward” or “westward” according to the direction of travel. Although two-way GMT watches are not new, they are relatively uncommon, and each watch is a little different. Ordinary GMT/UTC watches usually only allow the wearer to adjust the 24-hour hands in one direction. Every time you press the button on the side of the 1919 Globetimer UTC case, the UTC pointer will move for a full hour in one direction or the other. Unless you are traveling to a place with a 30-minute time zone, this is almost all the travel monitoring features you need when trying to determine the time in two different time zones at once.
Porsche Design includes a variety of complications, including a small window near 9 o’clock, which can be used as a day/night (AM/PM) indicator for the main time zone. This helps the wearer better adjust the main time for working in coordination with the UTC pointer. The dial also has a date indicated by the hands on the main dial. The Globetimer in 1919 stretched out five hands from the main trunk with this hand. In essence, this is not a record, but it is very uncommon and another interesting story.
Porsche Design commented on two additional functions of the WERK 04.110 movement, which are worth mentioning. First of all, the fact is that adjusting UTC time will not negatively affect the performance of the movement, that is, it will not affect the accuracy of the main time. In some watches, the adjustment system is suspended or blocked when operating functions. replica Porsche Design has made it clear that operating UTC complications will not affect timing accuracy. In addition, the movement is certified by COSC chronograph, which adds added value and ensures timekeeping performance.
